Step 1 – Establish a Written Policy Statement
Create a policy statement to outline the purpose of your RTW program. This can be a simple paragraph that includes employee and employer expectations and communicates the policy to all employees.
Your policy should include language about the need for a return-to-work physician’s note that details any physical limitations or restrictions the employee may have.

Step 2 – Find a Medical Provider
Visit our Find a Provider page to find a preferred provider who will assist you in bringing employees back to work as soon as they are medically able.

Step 3 – Develop Procedures
Create a written document listing responsibilities, steps, and necessary forms to use when an injury occurs.

Step 4 – Create a List of Modified or Alternate Tasks
Identify tasks that can be completed by employees with common restrictions. These may include seasonal tasks, “rainy day” projects, administrative duties, organizing supplies, or helping train other employees.
